More overcast means driving out to Aquinnah for a bike ride around
there . . . but disaster strikes at Orange Peel Bakery after stocking up on
snacks. Our rear windshield is shattered
into a billion pieces by the act of the bikes on our rack hitting a tree. Don’t panic, everybody! A few phone calls later and we’re told we can
get it fixed Wednesday or Thursday.
Well, we’re all the way out here, and it isn’t raining and we’re led
by ice-in-his-veins Bill so we take our ride along Lighthouse Road and
Lobsterville Beach anyway, and it is pretty nice. A few hours later and Bill and Peter have
done a masterful job attaching a temporary cover of clear plastic to the back
of the car. In fact, this is quite
thrilling for the Payroll Officer, as he does like a good hardware store, and
Shirley’s in Vineyard Haven does not disappoint.
So we’re off again, to Oak Bluffs for dinner – but with Slice of Life
is closed, Beetlebung does in a pinch although it’s trendy and spendy. But dinner isn’t the point this evening. We’re there for the Built on Stilts dance
festival which is great as always – especially the boogie-ing seniors and the
one with the lampshades – except for the part where I missed a step getting up
to go to the circle sing and managed to sprain my right toe and whack various
other bits of me on a pew.[1] I spent the rest of the show lying down in
back and missed some great dancing. An
apple fritter from Back Door Donuts[2]
didn’t do much to ease the pain but it did taste good.
[1] Days later there are still bruises showing up in all sorts of places.
[2] We are just getting started with the fritters.
